Nicholas Moore, who pleaded guilty for hacking into the US Supreme Court’s electronic document filing system multiple times over several months, was sentenced Friday to one year of probation.
Moore also hacked the network of AmeriCorps, a government agency that runs volunteer stipend programs, and the systems of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which provides health care and benefits to military veterans.
The man bragging about his accomplishments on an Instagram account named @ihackedthegovernment, where he posted the personal information of the people he hacked. Moore used one of his victim’s credentials to quickly access the electronic document filing system of the US Supreme Court, AmeriCorps, and the Department of Veteran Affairs.
He faces a year in prison and a fine of $100,000 in damages. Prosecutors later asked for a mistrial.
“I made a mistake,” Moore said during Friday’s sentencing hearing, according to The Hill. “I’m really sorry. I respect the laws, and I want to be a good citizen.”
