Kawamura’s thoughts on the film came from conversations with legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who mentioned that the greatest games are fun for both players and those who watch them. “So what I tried to do in the film is really put the audience in the shoes of the player in certain shots… almost like they’re watching a video game livestream in other scenes,” he told Engadget in an interview (through a translator). “Structurally, that’s the thread of the movie.”

At first, it was just an ordinary subway station with large poster advertising, photo booths and haphazard maintenance doors. But he soon noticed that the room was repeating itself. Thanks to a helpful set of instructions on the wall, he learns that his only way out is to start tracking anomalies, like subtle changes in text, or the way a robot merchant walks past him. Kawamura noted that his experience working in the animation field had a significant impact on his creations. Exit 8. In particular, the works of Satoshi Kon and Katsuhiro Otomo influenced how he externalized the thoughts and feelings of his characters and how he depicted the interaction between dreams and the real world.

“When we were shooting, I told my director of photography that the star of the movie was the hallway,” he said. “And all of our human characters, they don’t have names, so they’re the NPCs in this corridor, the protagonists. So I wanted the corridor to almost evoke this feeling in the audience that it has a will of its own. And this yellow Exit 8 sign is almost like this divine God-like presence.”

Kawamura said he personally sees it as a corridor that challenges sinful humans, but you can easily interpret other meanings. What’s more, Exit 8 isn’t just a faithful recreation of the source material – it adds enough content to make a case for existing standalone media, a challenge that many video game adaptations suffer from.
