Cameron Norrie: British number one knocked out of Barcelona Open after losing to Spain’s Rafael Jordal in quarter-finals


Britain’s Cameron Norrie was eliminated from the Barcelona Open quarter-finals after losing in straight sets to Rafael Hodahl.

Hodahl produced an impressive performance on the clay courts of the Royal Tennis Club in Barcelona to beat seventh seed Nori 6-3 6-2 in 69 minutes.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who had not been ranked among the top 600 in the world 12 months ago, exchanged serve with Norrie in the opening five games and eventually took control of the first set.

Norrie managed to hold his serve in the first two games of the second set, but at 2-2, Jordal seemed to find that extra gear against the British number one.

“Cameron has always been a tough opponent to play against. I think I handled the big moments and pressure moments in the game well,” Jordahl said.

“I’m very happy with my performance today, but I know I have to keep going. I have to keep working hard. There’s more games to come.”

The teenager’s victory was his third win over a top-30 player, following his victory over Norrie at the Mexico Open in February and American rookie Tenn in the Next Generation ATP final.
