Women’s World Cup qualifiers: Sophie Ingall says playing for Wales ahead of 150th game is more important than club success

Wales are looking for a third win in four games in Group B1 as they look to stay level with the Czech Republic in the race for top spot.

Wales have no automatic route to the Women’s World Cup as they are in the second tier, but finishing first would mean a more favorable draw for the play-offs later in the year.

Last month, Wales beat Montenegro 6-1 after a late draw with the Czech Republic in their first game of the season. A 4-0 win over Albania at Wrexham in midweek.

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic won 5-1 in Albania and defeated Montenegro 5-0 at home.

The group winner is therefore likely to be decided when Wales host the Czech Republic in their final game in June, with countries tied on points initially decided on head-to-head record.

“We have to get three points (against Albania) and then we have to go into June training camp and get two wins,” Inger said.

Wilkinson believes Wales will face a tougher test away from home in Albania than they do at Stoke Kailas, partly because weather conditions mean training on Friday will require the use of 50x more sunscreen.

“It’s a bit hotter here than Wrexham,” she said.

“But I’m very happy with Tuesday’s performance because what we have been asking for, they are trying to achieve.

“I hope we can have back-to-back performances like this.”
