Gears of War movie Director David Leitch said he feels optimistic that the film will “happen” after months of no updates for fans.
The filmmaker, who is best known for his work on projects like Bullet Train and The Fall Guy, offered an update on the long-in-development video game adaptation during a conversation with Collider. While a movie starring characters like Marcus Phoenix and Dom Santiago is still trying to piece itself together, it looks like this is something fans can look forward to… finally.
“Gears of War, I think, will happen,” Leitch said. “We have a great draft that continues to be in very good shape. The studio is more determined than ever to get this done.”
The director added that “Netflix is 100% behind it,” indicating that, while most of the Gears of War movie is coming together behind the scenes, there is still a real effort to bring it to movie fans. Meanwhile, Leitch said series developer The Coalition is “also fired up.” That team is currently struggling to work Gears of War: E-Daywho is destined to receive a dedicated Direct presentation this June.
“They have a game coming out this year, as well, and so everything is lining up for that movie to happen,” Leitch added.
The history of Microsoft’s efforts to get a Gears of War movie into action is long and there haven’t been many adequate updates. Efforts to bring the dark sci-fi series to moviegoers started in the mid-2000s but eventually withered in the following years. That is, until Scott Suber in Battleship embarked on the project in 2013only for it to die and then back to 2016 with confirmation from Universal in 2016.
A similar set of updates followed until 2022, when Netflix announced it will work with The Coalition on not only a Gears of War film but an adult animated series, too. We know now Leitch came on board as directorwith Dune and Doctor Strange scribe Jon Spaihts reportedly joined in 2023.
Although there haven’t been any updates on that animated spinoff, the Gear of War movie is more promising than ever. Guardians of the Galaxy veteran Dave Bautista shooting for a part of the project FROM at least 2018but no official casting updates yet.
