Eva Victor Speaks for the debut of “Sorry, Baby”

The film, which Victor wrote, directed and directed, premiered at Sundance in 2025 before being picked up by A24 for $8M. The story of the film is ‘Something happened to Agnes, but life goes on… for everyone around her.

Victor said that after writing the script “the problem was really because I realized that I wanted to direct but I didn’t know how to do it.” It took about three years between sending the script and shooting and, during that time, I had to prepare for the lead because I wanted to do it very well.

Barry Jenkins produced the title with Adele Romanki and Pastel by Mark Ceryak. Victor recalled that Jenkins DMed them after watching their videos posted on Twitter. When he first met Jenkins, Victor said: “I was very shy – I always think about it really. He was very appreciative of my videos and he said that what I do is directing, although it is very different, it is small, but you are making decisions, you are choosing the direction of the camera and choosing what you want to use. A little seed in me that made it feel like these people see me in a way that goes beyond the world of comedy.”

Victor explained how Jenkins’ support helped them learn to let go when making a film. Referring to one scene after his character Agnes was raped and went to his car, Victor remembers that “afterwards he wanted the whole car to be in the blue hour, the magic window of 20 minutes of that day.”

They said: “The producers told me it was impossible because we would go back like six times and I was worried because I didn’t want him to feel like he was in the house forever. “But in the end Barry was the one who discouraged me and said that it was good that what he experienced in the house he felt interested, sometimes he walks by obedience, and he goes out at night because his whole world has changed.

“And it’s okay if that’s not true, but it might be true how he feels. So I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll free myself.’ And it was a good production. “
