The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Thursday that it will reduce flight schedules Chicago O’Hare International Airport Despite the high number of cancellations and delays, airlines serving the airport plan to expand flights.
O’Hare is the busiest airport in the United States by flight volume, with more than 3,080 flights scheduled for the peak summer day in 2026, a 14.9% increase from the peak summer day in 2025, when arrivals and departures were on-time only 60% of the time.
The FAA’s schedule cuts will limit the number of daily operating flights at O’Hare to 2,708 to prevent a significant increase in flights from last summer’s daily peak numbers, which would lead to massive delays and cancellations. Flight restrictions will be in effect from May 17 to October 24, 2026.
“If you have booked a flight, we want you and your family to be sure that your flight will not be subject to endless delays and cancellations,” said Transport Minister Sean DuffyHe added that the FAA will follow a similar template as another of the nation’s busiest airports to streamline operations at O’Hare.
