In the United States, horror comics were extremely popular until they came to the attention of censors in the mid-1950s, most notably Psychiatrist Frederick Wortham. He and others claim that comics in general contribute to an increase in juvenile crime. This idea has naturally been proven wrong. Whether true or not, the accusations led to lengthy hearings in which EC Comics publisher Bill Gaines was forced to defend books such as tales from the crypt. Gaines’ hearing went badly, and he was accused of corrupting young people.
