Fuel prices across India remained steady on April 18, even as global crude markets remained subdued amid tensions in West Asia and disruptions to key shipping routes. The freeze in prices comes amid heightened political sensitivities ahead of state elections.
In Delhi, petrol continues to sell at Rs 94.77 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 87.67 per litre. Prices remained higher in Mumbai, where petrol was sold at Rs 103.54 per liter and diesel at around Rs 90.03 per litre.
In major cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata, the price of petrol is more than Rs 100 per litre, while diesel continues to be below Rs 100.

What drives petrol and diesel prices in India?
Fuel prices at the pump are shaped by a combination of global, economic, and domestic factors. At the heart of this is the international price of crude oil, the base raw material for petrol and diesel, which has the biggest impact on what consumers pay.
The rupee-dollar exchange rate is another key variable, as India is heavily dependent on imported crude oil. When the rupee weakens against the dollar, the cost of purchasing crude oil rises, which can directly feed into higher retail fuel prices.
Why are prices different in different cities?
On top of that, the taxes imposed by the central and state governments make up a large part of the final price, so petrol and diesel prices vary across states. Transportation costs and prevailing demand-supply conditions also factor into the retail price consumers see at the pump.
