Coventry City manager Frank Lampard described the team’s return to the Premier League after an absence of 25 years as a “unique” achievement.
The Sky Blues secure a top-two finish in the Championship with three games remaining A 1-1 away draw against struggling Blackburn Rovers.
Lampard told Sky Sports: “Being a non-parachute (paid) team, automatically promoted with three games to go… these boys have achieved something special and unique.”
“That’s the problem. It’s not easy to come here and get a point at this stage.”
He added: “To do this 25 years later…wow.
“Resilience after the play-offs (losing to Sunderland last season). We talked in the summer about what we could do this season and whether we could finish third or fourth in the second game and get a home play-off opportunity, which we didn’t do last year.
“It feels great when the kids make it across the finish line.”
The 47-year-old former Chelsea and England midfielder takes over at CBS Stadium in November 2024, his first job outside the top flight since his spell at Derby County in 2018-19.
An emotional Lampard also praised the “incredible” job done by his predecessor Mark Robins, who he said had “fallen in love” with the club during his time in the Midlands and guided Coventry back to the top flight while winning numerous accolades as a player.
“I’m proud of myself and my employees,” he said.
“When we arrived on a passenger bus about 15 months ago, we were thrust into an unfamiliar situation.
“We fell in love, which is as good as anything I’ve ever accomplished.
“I’m proud to be the manager.”
