OpenAI executive Kevin Weil is leaving the company

Kevin Weil, OpenAI Former Chief Product Officer Wired magazine confirmed that he, who was recently tasked with building Prism, a new artificial intelligence workspace for scientists, is leaving the company. Weill was previously an early executive Instagram’s leading product.

“Today is my last day at OpenAI as OpenAI for Science is being dispersed to other research teams,” Weil said on social media postal Shortly after Wired reported his departure on Friday. “From the chief product officer to joining the research team and launching OpenAI for Science, these two years have been two years of mind expansion.”

Weir did not immediately respond to WIRED’s request for comment.

Open artificial intelligence Prism is also gradually withdrawing from the stage of history. The company roll out January’s web app gives scientists better ways to work with artificial intelligence. The company has brought together a team of about 10 people behind OpenAI Codex, led by Thibault Sottiaux, head of OpenAI Codex, to integrate Prism’s capabilities into its desktop Codex application. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the changes, telling Wired that they are part of the company’s strategy to unify its business and products. OpenAI has a bigger goal, turning its AI coding application Codex into an “everything application.”

Weil joined OpenAI in June 2024 and announced in September last year that he would launch a new initiative within the company called OpenAI for Science. Now, OpenAI is spreading those employees across the company’s product, research, and infrastructure teams. An OpenAI spokesperson reiterated the company’s commitment to accelerating scientific discovery and said it is one of the clearest ways artificial intelligence can benefit humanity. Earlier on Friday, the company announced a new series of artificial intelligence models – GPT-Rosalind – designed to help life science researchers work faster.

OpenAI is trying to refocus the company’s focus on several key areas, such as enterprise products and coding, as the company faces growing pressure Competitors like Anthropic and is preparing to file for an initial public offering later this year. In March, OpenAI Fidji Simo, CEO of AGI Deployment, Tell employees that the company needs to simplify its product offerings. Efforts to shift resources to more important work led OpenAI to halt its project Sora video generation application.

Unrelated to Weil’s news, two other senior executives announced on Friday that they were leaving OpenAI. Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer for Enterprise Applications, announced internally that he will be leaving the company to spend time with his family. Narayanan joins OpenAI as the company’s vice president of engineering. and Bill Peebles, head of Sora, release On X, he also completed work on OpenAI.

The exits of Weil, Peebles and Narayanan are just the latest in a series of senior executive changes at OpenAI. The company recently announced Major reorganization of executive team Seamus took a sick day off to focus on his health. In the same announcement, OpenAI said that co-founder and president Greg Brockman will oversee the company’s products during this period, and that the company’s chief marketing officer Kate Rouch will take a leave of absence due to health concerns. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appears to acknowledge the recent turmoil blog post. “I’m also very aware that OpenAI is now a major platform rather than a scrappy startup, and we now need to operate in a more predictable manner,” he wrote. “It’s been an extremely tense, chaotic and high-pressure few years.”
